JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) – Officials in Jeffersonville are investigating a fire in the 800 block of Howard Avenue Monday night.

Firefighters said the fire broke out at the Executive House Apartments just before 10 p.m.

Officials said a ceiling collapsed while crews were battling the blaze and a firefighter was injured. The firefighter was transported to University of Louisville hospital via a police escort.

"It really hits home when it's one of your own. It's part of the job, but we try to do our best to stay safe," Bruce Deark, Jeffersonville Fire Department deputy chief, said.

An elderly man and two women were also taken to the hospital for observation, firefighters said.

Several residents were displaced because of the fire.

"We got a lot of residents that live inside this building. They're going to be displaced, don't know what we're going to do. Probably lost everything we owned in this fire. Don't know what we're going to do," resident Dave Waters said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
