(WHAS11) – Prom is the biggest event of the year for many high school students.

One North Carolina student said she was kicked out of her senior prom because of the choice of clothing.

The center of the controversy is surrounded by a pair of red jeans.

Shafer Rupard said there isn’t a school dress code policy so she should be able to wear whatever she wants even if it’s not a prom dress.

Rupard says she wasn’t on the dance floor for 5 minutes until her senior prom was abruptly ended.

“Teacher tapped me on the shoulder. She had a problem with what I was wearing. I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no – It’s the pants," Rupard said.

Rupard and her mother are trying to ask school officials why she was asked to leave the prom.
