LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- JCPS announced on Tuesday that Dr. Houston Barber will be the principal at The Academy at Shawnee.

Barber has a history of turning around low performing schools. He’s been at Fern Creek High School since 2007, which had been identified as one of the lowest performing schools in the state.

Since his time there, he’s improved test scores, college and career readiness and the graduation rate. Barber will face similar goals at Shawnee in addition to building relationships.

He says getting to know the students is a direct correlation to results.

“I think if you know where they are academically, behaviorally, socially and emotionally, you know what plan to put in place for that child, you know who to get them connected to and you know how to move them,” Barber said.

Shawnee has been without a principal since the former requested a leave of absence. Barber starts on Jan. 6.

Finding his replacement at Fern Creek will start immediately.

“What I committed to them was I will post it tomorrow, I will work throughout the break to make sure we find the right leader to take Fern Creek the next step of the way,” Superintendent Donna Hargens said.
