LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)—With Thunder looming, many people are concerned about safety for this year’s Kentucky Derby Festival.

In a poll on WHAS11.com, it was asked if the recent violence would keep people coming to Thunder and other Festival events like the Pegasus Parade.  At the last check, 58 percent of people said yes, while 35 percent said no and another eight percent said maybe.

The recent teen mob violence, with possible connections to the middle school gang called ‘YNO,’ has shaken a lot of people and may cause lower than expected numbers at many events.

The Mayor and LMPD are doing all they can to assure people the Festival will have safe events, especially by putting more than 1,100 officers to work during Thunder and the air show that precedes it.

Click the video to hear more from LMPD Sgt. Phil Russell and the police’s safety plans for this year’s KDF.
