Louisville, KY (November 15, 2013) – The shift of traffic patterns for Interstate 64 is now scheduled for the week of November 18 after construction and weather delays.
The section of Interstate 64 under construction will be temporarily shut down two evenings next week to allow for a shift of traffic patterns. The two westbound lanes have been divided by a permanent barrier wall since August. Traffic will be shifted back to the original lane configuration.
The westbound lanes of I-64, from Exit 35 to Exit 28, are currently scheduled for closure from 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18 until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The closure will detour westbound I-64 traffic off on Exit 35 on to KY 53. The detour will continue to KY 55X, west on KY 55/Shelbyville Bypass, to U.S. 60W and then to KY 1848 which will lead to I-64 Exit 28 (Simpsonville). The left turn lane from KY 53N to US 60W will be closed during the closure to aid in traffic flow.
The I-64 Exit 32 westbound entrance ramp will also be closed during this period.
As the I-64 widening project continues in Shelby County, from mile point 27.9 to 32.8, construction is entering the next phase necessitating the switch in traffic patterns for the eastbound lanes. Eastbound I-64 traffic will be diverted to the newly constructed center lanes beginning at the Welcome Center. There will be a lane split with permanent barrier wall between the two travel lanes. Motorists should be aware that the shoulders will be limited and will narrow at the bridge crossings. This traffic pattern will remain in effect throughout the winter.
To accommodate this traffic switch, full closure of eastbound I-64 is necessary. The eastbound lanes of I-64, between Exit 28 and Exit 35, are scheduled for closure from 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Motorists should follow the signed detour via Exit 28 onto KY 1848. The detour will continue north to US 60E, east on KY 55/Shelbyville Bypass, south on KY 55X and then connect with KY 53. Motorists will continue south on KY 53 and then access I-64 at Exit 35 (Shelbyville).
The construction project, which will widen the section of I-64 from four lanes to six lanes, is scheduled to be completed in late summer 2014.
The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
