SEYMOUR, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A disturbing story out of Jackson County, Ind. after a man is accused of forcing his wife to sign a "sex slave" contract.

Kenneth Harden of Seymour is charged with 38 felonies ranging from rape and strangulation to criminal confinement and domestic battery.

The victim in this case became Harden's wife in July 2013 after meeting him through Craigslist. The two supposedly signed a slave contract, in which Harden was the master and she was his slave.

In addition to accusations of rape and choking, the police report states the wife was required to wear her slave collar at all times except when attending church or seeing her mother. Harden also allegedly put a locked box over her head and allegedly made her stand in front of their bedroom window with no shirt on as a form of public humiliation.

Neighbors were shocked when they heard the news.

“That's awful, that's terrible," Nellie Godding, who lives a few streets away, said.

"That lady should have never had to go through that. Prisoners of war probably don't go through that hard of treatment," Charlotte Perry, who has lived in Seymour all her life, said.  "They said he was sadist and that's what sadists do. In this day and age slavery? I don't know. I'm just glad they got him."

Godding and Perry live more than a block away and said they could not hear any problems. But according to the police report, neighbors who live in the apartment building heard screams, and reported them to management, not the police.

Police asked the victim why she did not leave the relationship. She said that Harden controlled the medicine for her severe diabetes, so she felt she could not leave.

Some of these charges allegedly happened with a child less than 16-years-old present in the home.
