BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- The college homes of Indiana University students away from the campus for the holidays present inviting burglary targets, so authorities are urging them to take steps to protect their possessions.
Bloomington Police Department Capt. Joe Qualters says burglary and theft reports surge at off-campus residences and larger apartment complexes once students return from holiday breaks. He tells The Herald Times that students may represent a third to a half of all burglary cases recently received by the Bloomington Police Department.
WRTV-TV reports campus officials also advise students to pack up their valuables before vacating their dorm rooms for the holidays.
Police also advise students to take pictures of their items and write down serial numbers.
