Ind. man dies in ATV accident

MITCHELL, Ind. (News Release) -- An Indiana man died Sunday after the ATV he was riding rolled over on top of him.

Indiana Conservation officers are investigating the death of 47-year-old Kelley D. Kern of Mitchell. 

On 8/5/2012 at 7:00 P.M. Kern was involved in an all terrain vehicle accident.

According to witnesses, Kern was operating a four wheel all terrain vehicle at a high rate of speed in an attempt to jump a steep embankment at around 7 p.m. Sunday .  Kern lost control and the ATV rolled over causing trauma to both his head and chest.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s department, Marion Township Fire department, and IU health ambulance responded to the scene.  Kern was transported to IU Health Bedford where he was pronounced dead. 

Kern was operating a four wheel drive 650 Honda ATV and was not wearing any safety equipment at the time of the accident. 

The accident occurred on privately owned property on Twin Bridges road outside of Mitchell.
