(WHAS11) – Seven people were killed and 58 others were hurt a year and a half ago when the stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair.
One of the victims caught in the tragedy was Andrea Vellinga.
Vellinga has been on a long road to recovery since August 2011.
Her skull was crushed in the accident and part of her skull had to be removed that night.
After 7 surgeries, three specifically to replace the missing skull, she’s finally healthy enough to take off the pink helmet she’s needed to protect her brain.
Although he body is finally healing, Vellinga’s life will never be the same.
Vellinga says she doesn’t remember the accident that changed her life, but she now has scars that are a constant reminder of what she’s overcome.
