INDIANAPOLIS (WHAS11) -- An Indiana Senate panel has approved a requirement that would force some welfare recipients to pass drug tests before they can receive benefits from the state.

The measure approved today would only apply to those who had previously been convicted of a drug crime.

Supporters of the legislature say it's needed to make sure welfare recipients are not misusing the benefits to buy drugs.

Opponents say the measure violates the constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure.
