LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release) -- Two major Interstate 65 projects in Louisville are coming to a close as Monday approaches.

Steel repairs and concrete paving on the John F. Kennedy Bridge project has progressed to the point where two lanes of traffic opened Sunday afternoon on northbound I-65 on the bridge. The additional lane opened around 10 a.m. Sunday.  Crews were also able to open the northbound I-65 exit ramp to Jeffersonville, Ind. (Exit 0).

Work will continue in the upcoming week on removal of temporary barriers and replacement of a section of median barrier walls on the bridge.

As part of the Kennedy Bridge project, repairs were also being made to ramps in the I-64/I-65 interchange. Project engineers estimate that the ramps from eastbound I-64 and westbound I-64/southbound I-71 to southbound I-65 will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, July 23.

In addition,  the ramps from westbound I-64/southbound I-71 to northbound I-65 are anticipated to be open by 6 a.m. Monday.

A separate project on I-65 has the southbound lanes closed between I-64 in downtown Louisville and I-264 (Watterson Expressway). These lanes closed Friday evening to allow for asphalt paving. Crews are currently on schedule to have all of these lanes open by 5 a.m. on Monday.

Work will continue during nights and weekends on other contract items such as guardrail installation and drainage structures. The contractor has until September 30th to complete this project.

The following ramps continue to be closed and will remain closed for the duration of the project:

•    The exit ramp from eastbound I-64 to northbound I-65 in Kentucky
•    The exit ramp from southbound I-65 to Market Street in Indiana
•    The entrance ramp from Court Avenue to southbound I-65 in Indiana

Vehicles wider than 9 feet are restricted from traveling through the work zone.

The construction is being done by MAC Construction and Excavating, of New Albany, Ind. at a cost of $18.2 million.  All work is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 15, 2012.

The schedule and duration of work are subject to change in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays.

Details of interchange improvements at I-71 and I-264:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently awarded a contract for interchange improvements at Interstates 71 and 264. Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in both directions between US 42 and I-71.

The entrance ramp from eastbound I-264 to northbound I-71 will be extended to the Lime Kiln Lane overpass.  A deceleration lane will be constructed on southbound I-71 for motorists exiting onto westbound I-264.

As part of this project, a new asphalt surface will be paved on I-264 between US 42 and I-71 and on I-71 between the Lime Kiln Lane overpass and I-264.

Lane closures are possible weeknights from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.  Shoulder closures may be in place during daytime hours.  The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 45 MPH. The work is scheduled for completion by December 15, 2012.
