FERN CREEK, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A suspect was shot and killed by a Louisville Metro Police officer after an armed robbery at the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Bardstown Road in Fern Creek.

Police were called out to the KFC in the 6600 block of Bardstown Road when a hold up alarm sounded  and when they arrived on scene, officers said they noticed the drive-thru window was busted.

Officers said they entered the restaurant where they found the suspect holding a gun and hostages tie up.

SWAT was called in, but before they arrived the suspect took one of the hostages and fled the scene, police said.

The hostage got away from the suspect and a foot chase ensued. Police said the suspect led officers from the restaurant through a wooded area behind the 9100 block of Beulah Church Road. That is when police said the suspect pulled out a gun and began firing at officers.

One of the pursuing officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. LMPD Chief Steve Conrad said they believe the officer's shot was the one that killed the suspect, but the investigation is not complete.

Police described the suspect as a man in his late 20s or early 30s.
