Henryville, Ind. (WHAS) – The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church marked a new beginning Sunday after the devastating tornadoes that hit the area March 2.
“Today was our opportunity to fully celebrate the restoration of the church,” Pastor Steve Schaftlein said.
The building sustained $250,000 worth of damage. Many of the members rode out the storm in the basement that day.
“I was standing right back there up against that wall, and I felt the whole thing shake,” Betty Hayes said. “I didn’t know what was happening but God kept us safe.”
The roof was recently fixed and the inside was repainted. Schaftlein said volunteers are still needed to help rebuild homes in town that were destroyed.
He also says it will take another year for things to get back to normal.
