LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) Former football great and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker was in Louisville on Friday to discuss mental health.

Walker, who is the author of Breaking Free, suffers from dissociative identity disorder, or multiple personalities.

He said at first he denied he had any issues, but soon realized he had a lot of anger, often times for no reason.

When he first began to talk about it, he said the NFL backed away and so did many others because mental health issues were taboo.

Walker said by sharing what happened to him in his book, with complete honesty, he was set free, and others were as well.

He was at Fort Knox on Thursday speaking to soldiers and Friday he spoke at Brook Hospitals in Louisville.

He said no one should feel shame about mental illness.
