HARLAN, Ky. (AP) -- When T.J. Brewer Jr. was 24, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given just a few months to live.

Nine years later, and with five brain surgeries behind him, the 33-year-old Kenvir resident is an inspiration to everyone he comes in contact with.

Brewer and his brother run Brewer's Gym, where he helps train a lot of middle and high school students for free, hoping to help them get athletic scholarships. He also is an ordained minister who gives motivational speeches at churches and clubs.

Defying a death sentence, Brewer said he has learned never to give up.

Brewer tells the Harlan Daily Enterprise, "If the doctors give up, you have to go to the great physician -- God."
