LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11/News Release) -- Guests of the Louisville Zoo were on hand to celebrate Gorilla Helen's 55th birthday on Saturday.
Guests and employees sang Happy Birthday and watched as Helen enjoyed a banana and fresh fruit cake designed by Heitzman's Traditional Bakery.
Helen, known as the 3rd oldest gorilla in North America, is a wild born western lowland gorilla who came to the Louisville Zoo from Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.
Gorillas average lifespan in the wild is 35 years.
The Louisville Zoo's Gorilla Forest is home to ten western lowland gorillas - Bengati, Cecil, Demba, Helen, Jelani, Kicho, Kweli, Mia Moja, Mshindi and Paki. Helen is in a group with Demba, another geriatric female gorilla.
