LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – February 25, 2014 marks 50 years since Louisville native Muhammad Ali began his march toward being called “The Greatest.”

Boxing fans were treated to a first look of the gloves worn by Cassius Clay 50 years ago when he won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time.

The gloves were sold at an auction conducted by Heritage Auctions in Dallas Saturday night for $836,000. The fight against Sonny Liston was also held on this date in 1964.

Shortly after this match, Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali. It was also during this time he said his infamous line “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” for the first time.

The gloves have been in the estate of Ali’s former trainer Angelo Dundee who passed away in 2012.

Dundee has signed the gloves that sold to an anonymous buyer.
