LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A Fort Knox soldier is under arrest and is charged with murder after a fatal shooting on the base Wednesday.
Detectives tracked down Marquinta Jacobs, 36, in Portland, Tenn. at his mother’s house and neighbors said they were in for quite a surprise.
"I saw the local police officer's vehicle with the two SWAT knelt down across the hood with their weapons that were pointed at the house," witness Joseph Matlock said.
Homeowners in Portland were evacuated overnight while the SWAT team went in.
Jacobs is a soldier with the Ft. Knox 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Special agents said he gunned down a civilian employee in a base parking lot Wednesday afternoon.
Court documents state he had a verbal argument with the victim before gunfire erupted and police said the shooting was not a random act of violence.
After the shooting, detective said Jacobs drove to his Radcliff home in a pickup truck, then hopped on a black motorcycle and sped away to his mother's house in Tennessee.
"I looked out the front door at that time and I saw several police cards out here, so obviously something's going on. That's when the officer told me there could be a possible homicide suspect next door," Jacob's neighbor Bob Morris said.
Investigators said Jacobs' wife confirmed he owned a Glock pistol with .45 caliber ammunition. They searched his Radcliff home and found several boxes of ammunition which is similar to evidence at the crime scene.
Jacobs will be in a U.S. District in Bowling Green on Friday. The victim’s identity should be released some time Friday.
