LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Rick Richards is the former mayor of West Buechel.

Richards was charged with drug trafficking in April when officers went into his home and recovered hydrocodone and oxycodone pills, according to a citation.

The citation also revealed that Richards flushed pills down the toilet when officers arrived.

“I have all the faith in the world in the justice system and I don’t see anything that would prevent  me from holding public office if elected,” he said.

Richards denied having a drug problem.

He was also accused of misusing $100,000 in taxpayer money when he was the mayor of West Buechel several years ago.

“If I did, I can say I didn’t know I was doing any wrong. I know ignorance is no excuse for the law,” Richards said.

Those in West Buechel were surprised to hear he planned to run for mayor again.

“We need somebody that is going to be honest and look out for the neighborhood and community’s best interest,” resident LaTosia Taylor said.

Richards says he wants better transparency in the city and says voters can trust him.

“I’ve learned what I’m supposed to do and I can’t be a little more diligent if I’m given another chance,” he said.
