(WHAS11) -- A former Shelby County teacher accused of sexually abusing of two 17-year-old boys was in a court room Monday morning.
Shannon Hirchert, a former special needs teacher at Martha Layne Collins High School, was in court for sentencing. Hirchert originally pleaded not guilty in the case, but withdrew that plea and accepted a plea deal to sexual abuse and distributing obscene material to minors.
A judge sentenced Hirchert to serve years probation, and Hirchert is no longer allowed to work as a teacher.
The commonwealth attorney said they offered a plea deal to Hirchert partially to avoid the victims from having to testify, which would help keep their identities anonymous from the public.
Hirchert accepted the plea deal and will also have to register as a sexual offender. She will not be permitted to contact minors without the permission of her probation officer. Hirchert will no longer be allowed to teach in Kentucky.
