LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A year after leaving office as Louisville’s Chief Prosecutor, former Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Dave Stengel wants to return to Frankfort.

Stengel filed to run for the 29th District seat in the Kentucky State House which represents the Fern Creek and Jeffersontown areas of Jefferson County.

Stengel held that office in the 1990’s before serving as Commonwealth’s Attorney for 16 years.

The seat is currently held by Republican Kevin Bratcher, who is seeing re-election.

Stengel says after a year of retirement, he’s ready to get back in public service.

“I really enjoyed the last time I was here. It’s a positive sort of place you can do good things for people instead of just throw them in jail. I'd always thought about running again and a year after being retired I thought even more about it and I just think the area needs more representation,” he said,

Stengel is the only Democrat in the primary while Bratcher is the only Republican.

The filing deadline was Tuesday afternoon.
