LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The colorful birds at the Louisville Waterfront are taking flight....sort of.

The 28 metal bird sculptures known as the Flock of Finns were removed Tuesday morning and are on their way to Ohio for restoration.

The flock project was developed in 2000 and the sculptures are based on smaller wooden birds by Louisville artist Marvin Finn.

The city said the restoration is necessary because many of the sculptures have faded and their paint is peeling after years of exposure to the elements.

The flock is expected to return to the Waterfront in the fall.
