LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The recent tragic death of a fireman working a car fire on the side of the interstate brought to light a problem facing emergency responders all over Kentuckiana.

Drivers should know that you are required by law to either move over or slow down.

"When you see those lights on the side of the road, the law is specific about slowing down to a slow rate of speed and merging into an adjacent lane away from the emergency vehicle if it is safe enough to do so," LMPD's Phil Russel said.

Police said if you aren't able to get over because of traffic, you should slow down or you could get a ticket.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.

So far, no charges have been filed.
