SELLERSBURG, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A Floyd County home is a total loss following a massive house fire on the 2100 block of Pleasantview Court.

New Chapel firefighters surrounded the home just before noon Saturday, as flames and heavy smoke shot high into the air.

"The fire was already blowing out of the garage and through the roof," Fire Chief Jamey Noel said.

The heat was so intense it brought down a portion of the house.

"As crews were pulling their initial hose line off, the front wall of the garage collapsed," Noel said.

Hours into the battle, firefighters had contained the blaze, leaving only a skeleton of the home standing.

Crews on site say the man inside was fortunate to get out alive, having had no idea the fire was spreading through his home.

"A passerby opened up the front door and yelled at him to get out of the house, and in my opinion, ultimately saved his life. As quickly as that fire was progressing it was a miracle that guy was able to get out," Noel said.

Fire investigators say it could take a week before they can pinpoint a cause of the fire.
