NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A New Albany family is left without a home after a massive fire.
The fire started around 12:30 p.m. Saturday on Honeysuckle Court.
The homeowners are counting their blessings that everyone was able to walk out of the home alive.
The family tells WHAS11 that they were getting ready to head to French Lick, Ind. for the weekend when they heard several popping noises come from their garage.
Next thing they knew, smoke alarms were going off and it was only minutes before their home of 11 years was in flames.
"It started expolding. I heard an explosion and it was our vehicles," said Connie Burgin
"Everything I've ever worked for is gone," added Connie.
She says her husband heard popping noises coming from the garage. When he checked it out, he was met by an inferno of thick black smoke and flames.
"Something happened in the garage. It spread quickly, went up through the attic" said Tom Campbell of the New Chapel fire department.
Campbell says it took fire fighters six minutes to respond but by then it was too late.
"When we got here the fire was already through the roof," said Campbell.
As the Burgin's collect what little they could salvage, they have an important reminder.
"If anybody doesn't have smoke detectors up or they're not working, they better get them. I might not have made it out because I was upstairs. When it exploded, I probably wouldn't have made it out," said Connie.
The family escaped without injuries and they want to thank their neighbors and the Salvation Army for help.
If you would like the help the family, donationations can be made in David and Connie Burgin's name through St. John's Lutheran Church in Lanesville.
