LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Site Based Decision Making Council at Atherton High School voted to approve a non-discrimination policy and gender identity.

The vote was 8-1 for the policy, after weeks of debate and comment from students and parents on the issue.

Earlier in the week, the school's SBDM agreed with the principal's ruling to allow a transgender student, who is male but identifies as female, to use the girl's restroom and locker room.

The Decision Making Council held a meeting at 5 p.m., but just after 21 minutes the policy was voted on and approved.

Parents said at least one formal complaint has been filed against the principal's ruling.
