LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Concerns over school security are being raised after a homicide occurred just a block away from an elementary school in Louisville.
The fatal shooting happened at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, April 29, on Fisk Court in Beecher Terrace.
Coleridge Taylor Elementary School is a block from the scene and parents say children were out on the playground shortly after the violence with a suspect still on the loose.
The school was never placed on a heightened level of security because police didn't immediately notify the district.
“When you have 600 kids in an elementary school and a guy with a gun killing people nearby then somebody needs to let somebody know and some action needs to be taken,” Jena Quesada, a parent, said.
Louisville Metro Police said they only alert schools about crimes in the area if they believe the suspect is still in the area or coming in the direction of a school.
A spokesperson told WHAS11 that their officers had credible information that the suspect had left the scene.
No arrests have been made in this murder yet.
