LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Fans flooded parking lots, grassy areas basically any empty space near Papa John Cardinal Stadium Monday afternoon to tailgate and get ready for Louisville’s first ACC football game.

“It was insane,” Katrina Wilson, a Cardinal fan as she exited the game said. “Everybody just so excited for the season starting. I mean the parking lot was full before you even got here. The game started at 8:00 and everyone was out here at 3:00.”

Katrina and other fans agreed the energy in the stadium for the season opener against Miami was definitely different than in prior years.

“The intensity was awesome,” she said. “Everybody is ready for the season.”

“Petrino coming in, the blackout: very intense,” Cardinal fan Alex Rosenblatt said.

It’s safe to say cards fans have been waiting for this night for a while.

“I think just the ACC and the energy and everything,” Danny Sinnard said at the tailgate Monday afternoon.

Katrina said this game was all she could think about today, and from the record-setting 55,428 attendance, it’s obvious she wasn’t alone.

“I was ready for the game today!” she exclaimed. “I was like watching the clock, let’s go!  It is jam packed in there. Like, the blackout is blacked out. It’s awesome.”
