LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)--  Sherri Jackson got a Christmas Eve present no mom wants-- a shirt, honoring her son, Dante Newsome, killed one year ago on Christmas Eve.

“Merry Christmas,” said Jackson looking up to the sky.  “We love you.”

Newsome’s friends continue to support the family.

Police arrested Steven Thompson, 19, for murdering Newsome during a robbery.  The incident happened across the street from Newsome’s alma mater, Shawnee High School.

“He might’ve stole my son’s soul, but he could never steal the memories and love that everybody has for my son,” Jackson said.

The vigil was suiting of Newsome’s demeanor, it was fun and full of kindness.

“We gonna go to somebody’s house and party up,” she said.

During the vigil, they focused on the need for everyone to care for each other to stop more violence.

Jackson says Dante’s birthday and the holidays are the hardest.

“I pray,” she said.  “And I cry.”

And she turns to friends and family whose memories do not only think of that emotional day a year ago, but also remember the good times before.

"If he was here he would tell me, ‘Mama, don't cry for me.  Cause I'm in a better place.  I'm looking out for you and daddy,’” said Jackson.
