LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The uncle of two victims who were shot and killed in a murder-suicide last week is raising awareness about domestic violence. Officer Jim Wood is a 23 year veteran with the LMPD and he is Jillian Wood’s uncle.

Jillian Wood and her 8-year-old daughter, Shelbi, were murdered at Lakeview Condominiums on Gardner Lane in Louisville.

The gunman was Wood’s ex-boyfriend, Gary Stewart. Stewart was also Shelbi’s father.  Ofc. Wood said on Sunday after witnessing horrible crimes he never thought tragedy would hit so close to home.

“I thought I would live through my entire life and not have to endure this type of horror,” he said.

Ofc. Wood and his niece Jocelyn Wood, who is Jillian’s twin sister, both plan on becoming advocates against domestic violence.

“I could hate him. I want to wake him up and kill him again, but what would that fix,” Jocelyn Wood said.

The family said this unthinkable tragedy has given them a purpose to help others from becoming victims to domestic violence.

Jillian Wood had an emergency protective order against her ex-boyfriend. The family of Gary Stewart has said he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

“If one family were kept from going through this agony this horror it would mean everything to me, everything to my family,” Ofc. Wood said.
Funds are also being raised to help the victim’s family for funeral costs. Blake Goldsmith, owner of Easy Cash Pawn, donated $5,000 to help with funeral costs. The family is still looking for donations. Anyone can donate at any Fifth Third Bank to the Jillian Wood and Shelby Stewart Memorial Fund.

A public visitation for Jillian Wood and Shelbi will be Tues., June 25,  from11 a.m. 2 p.m. at the Fern Creek Funeral Home. Their funeral will immediately follow.
