LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The day after a man plead guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend and their two young sons, a spokesperson for the victim’s family described emotional moments as they learned his sentence.

John Devine Sr. took a plea deal and was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.

He was accused of breaking into Sade Goldsmith’s Pleasure Ridge Park home in July 2012 and then killing her and their children.

Goldsmith’s mother Donna became so ill after the events, she needed medical attention.

“She wants the community to understand that her family will never be able to heal behind this triple shooting,” community activist Christopher 2X said. “When she’s well enough, she’s going to involve her life to domestic violence as it relates to Sade and these children.”

According to sources, Donna Goldsmith was torn about whether she wanted Devine to receive the death penalty or life behind bars.
