Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - A new decision from the Food and Drug Administration could save thousands of lives.

Regulators have approved a hand-held injector containing medicatino that can reverse heroin overdoses.

It's called Evzio, and it functions much like an EpiPen, which is used to treat allergy attacks.

Evzio is injected into the muscle, and it releases a drug that stops heroin and other opiods from fatally slowing a person's breathing.

The kit costs about sixty dollars and comes with two pre-filled syringes. The device is described as "user-friendly" and does not require and training.
