NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- An increase in bed bug infestations has led to a sweep of all public housing complexes in New Albany.

The housing authority has brought in exterminators and their bed bug-detecting dogs to search more than 1,000 homes. The exterminators with Black Diamond Pest Control say people can pick up bed bugs just about anywhere but there are effective ways to kill them

However the housing authority director says eliminating the problem altogether is tricky because after a home is rid of bed bugs, they can easily be brought back in through people and furniture.
