LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Louisville’s EMS Employee Awards Banquet surprised several first responders by giving them a chance to meet one of the thousands they help each year.

911 dispatchers, EMS paramedics, and fire fighters were all included in the list people invited.

The awards ceremony normally offers emergency personnel an award for their work to save lives across the Metro.

This was the first year they gave patients a chance to come and thank their heroes.

"We always wonder what happens,” Capt. John Slinger of the PRP Fire Department said.  “A lot of times after we leave the hospital that's all we know is what condition they're in when we leave the hospital."
