SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—A zookeeper is died after an elephant at the zoo in Springfield, Missouri Friday morning.
John Bradford, 62, was the senior zookeeper and the elephant manager was killed then an elephant he was caring for charged him.
Officials said Bradford was handling another elephant with other staff when Patience, a 41-year-old female elephant, got aggressive and charged Bradford.
Bradford had been with the zoo for over 30 years.
"Police are still investigating all the details,” Coretta Scott said, a spokeswoman for the City of Springfield, Mo. “They're interviewing co-workers. It's an extremely sad time for all the co-workers at the zoo and at the city."
There is no word on the fate of the elephant and a chaplain remains on hand with the staff at the zoo.
