RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) -- Eastern Kentucky University officials say they have suspended a rugby club for two years after a hazing incident led to an injury.
The Richmond Register (http://bit.ly/XLZV3g ) cited a statement from the school in reporting that an investigation found that a freshman was injured after agreeing to be paddled with a board that was more than three feet long. The university hazing board, which investigated the incident, said they found that the initiation rite has been practiced for at least two years. Investigators found that a sharp object in the board punctured the freshman's skin, causing bleeding.
The suspension will end on Aug. 18, 2014, but the club will remain on probation until the beginning of the spring semester in 2016.
