LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)--   The prestigious ‘Who’s Who’ award is an honor few students at Doss High School receive.  It is an honor that Darius Smith almost never even had a chance to get.

One night in 2009, bullets tore through a home on Hale Avenue.  Smith was hit, along with two other teenagers sleeping inside the home, one died.

Smith was shot in the head and some call his story a miracle, one that took years of therapy to relearn nearly everything.  He still walks with a slight limp, one of the few remaining reminders of what he endured.

On Wednesday, at Doss High School, 22 Senior students were honored as the ‘Who’s Who.’  Smith was among them.

Smith said he didn’t expect the recognition.

His math teacher said Smith always gives 110 percent and his personality is the best, but his story is unbelievable.

It is a story of true grit and faith.  Smith’s mother said there is nothing that God cannot heal.

Darius said to never give up, keep trying because the sun will eventually shine and things do get better.
