LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A wild car accident on Derby Day, caught on tape. A motorist crashed into several vehicles in the Portland neighborhood and it all ended with the driver running through a fence and into a building.

At about 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, when most people were crowding Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, a crash left damage for several blocks.

Police said 39-year-old Frank Michael Roberts first hit a utility pole on Northwestern Parkway before slamming into an SUV on Montgomery Street and driving off. The driver eventually ran through a fence and crashed into a building.

The family, who asked not to appear on camera, said their son was standing right behind an SUV working on another car about a minute before the crash happened. He walked away to look for a part, took just a few steps and that kept him out of harm’s way.

WHAS11 was on the scene when police arrested Roberts. Neighbors said he’s been in trouble several times before. We took a look into his criminal past. There are pages and pages of prior arrests including drug and alcohol charges, terroristic threatening, driving without a license or insurance, and so on, dating back to 1992.

Police charged Roberts with DUI and operating a motor vehicle without insurance for this latest incident.

The family is left wondering who is going to pay to have their vehicle fixed.
