NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11) -- Six people were killed overnight after a crash in Nicholasville, Ky.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Thursday.

Police said a vehicle traveling north on U.S. 27 crossed the median, collided head-on with a van and burst into flames.

We’ve learned witnesses say the SUV may have been tailgating or trying to pass another northbound vehicle.

Five people were in each vehicle, police said, and some of those killed were children. The four injured were transported to the hospital, but police did not comment on the extent of their injuries.

It is not clear at this time what caused the driver to lose control and cross the median.

We will continue to follow this story and bring you the latest information as it becomes available.
