CRAWFORD CO., Ind. (WHAS11) -- WHAS11 has learned a Crawford County, Ind. deputy has been shot.

The report came in around 5 a.m. this morning and we're told the deputy was take to University Hospital.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, 26-year-old Jesse Belcher of English shot himself in the head some time between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Friday morning.

Police said Belcher finished a shift around 10 p.m. Thursday. Belcher apparently called a fellow deputy before the shooting and the deputy became concerned because of Belcher's demeanor. Police said the deputy tried to call Belcher back, but he did not answer and that's when two deputies responded to Belcher's home on Benham Mill Road.

The release states the deputies found Belcher had shot himself in the head with a handgun.

Belcher was transported to University Hospital in Louisville where is reported to be in surgery.

Police said it is not clear at this time if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

WHAS11's Gene Kang is at the hospital and said fellow law enforcement officials and family members are awaiting news about Belcher's condition, which Gene described as "not good."
