(WHAS11)-- Rescue crews in northeast Massachusetts raced against the clock to save a prized horse trapped in an icy marsh.

Two people were out enjoying a walk in a rural part of Essex County when they made the discovery and called for help.

Firefighters used chains and ropes to free the 2,000 mare named  "Moonshine"

The horse sunk deep after falling through the ice water with the the mud up to her neck.

A construction crane had to be brought in to help pull her out of the water.

The horse is expected to be OK, after vets administered IV’s and fluids. The horse did suffer from hypothermia.
