LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A new Louisville landmark in an expanded waterfront park?
"It would be an interesting idea for a Ferris wheel. And not the kind of Ferris wheel you see at a state fair but an iconic Ferris wheel," Waterfront Development Corporation President David Karem said. "The big and exciting news is that we are working on phase four of the park."
The corporation, along with other city officials, has plans to extend the park from 10th to 14th streets, allowing an additional 22 acres of space. A design team is coming up with unique ideas to encourage exercise in the park.
"We've coined this term 'exerscape'," Karem said.
It would be a larger escape for those who already use the park.
"If you give people opportunities for play, especially kids, you're going to benefit from that," Karem said.
At this point, these are all ideas. The contracted design team is thinking big and there is no timeline for a project start date. Karem believes that extending the park westward, adding a big shiny attraction, and more space for Kentuckiana is a dream would be great for the city.
"You can imagine as you're coming down 64 or across the bridges, to see this sort of wonderful thing that would be a real signature piece for the city so it has captured people's imagination," Karem said.
No cost estimates have been released yet.
