LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Remember how Wes Welker shared his Derby winnings with complete strangers? Well, it seems his luck may have run out.
Churchill Downs said a machine malfunction means one of the members of the Denver Broncos player's entourage was paid nearly $15,000 more than he should have been.
Churchill Downs issued the following statement:
“An individual believed to be a member of Wes Welker’s group at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day was the beneficiary of an overpayment on a winning wager of more than $14,000 due to a tote malfunction. In turn, a letter has been sent to that individual in an attempt to resolve the error.”
In the letter, Churchill Downs officials gave him the option to return the money, an option that he does not seem keen on.
"They can get in line," he said in an interview.
Welker's friend won more than $57,000 on his derby bet. He was so pumped, he began randomly passing out $100 bills.
