Churchill Downs, area restaurants celebrate 'mom'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Gloomy weather didn’t stop the flurry of activities around town for mother’s celebrating their special day.

Mother’s Day was celebrated in various fashions today including brunch at Churchill Downs.

Families ate and enjoyed a day of racing which is considered different than your average Mother’s Day.

“This is a day at the races, where you have some great racing going on, but other entertainment. Bringing mom to a day at the races, enjoying the afternoon and some great dining buffets, it's a great day out here,” Darren Rogers said,

An estimated 10,000 people turned out for the Downs’ event.

Across town, restaurants rolled out their best for mothers.

At Winston’s Restaurant at Sullivan University, Chef John Castro’s famous “Not Brown” was one of the star dishes of their Mother’s Day buffet.

There was also a carving station, pastries, deserts and a made to order omelet bar.

Mothers and their families enjoyed the spread on this special day.

“You know, it's always great to see so many people come in with their families and it's always nice in this day and age to see people interact with each other. You know it's rare and this is one day a year where you'll rarely see a kid pull out a cell phone just to check it. So it's good," Executive Chef John Castro said.
