(WHAS11)-It was ten months ago Monday that the Portland Avenue Presbyterian church was destroyed by fire and now the plans are underway to rebuild it.
The 117-year-old church burned to the ground January 16th and since then its congregation has been using other venues for worship.
On Sunday, church leaders announced plans it will use the old Kroger store on Portland Avenue as the site of their new church.
It's just steps away from where the old church once stood.
We're just totally sort of walking on air right now because god has propelled us. Never did we believe we would be here 10 months after that fire," says Rev. Willa Fae Williams
The new complex will incorporate the site of the old church, and the old church bell was the only thing that survived the fire.
It will cost more than $5 million to build; over half of the cost is covered by insurance.
The completion of the church is projected be complete by May of 2010
