LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)- If you owe back child support your name is about to be published for all of Louisville to see. The annual list will come out this weekend and some parents owe hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell would not divulge the list of those who owe back child support but he says one parent owes $436,000.
“This has been one of the most successful things that we can point to where we collect support (we) otherwise would not have been able to find and it’s due to the help we get form everyone in the community,” said O’Connell.
The list of parents delinquent on their child support payments comes out in the Sunday Courier-Journal newspaper. Seven percent of the offenders are women. $61,000 is the largest amount a mother owes.
“It affects family relationships. It affects other resources a family has. Child care is a big expense,” said Sharon Mohn, Director of the Presbyterian Child Development Center. Mohn says about 90 percent of their kids come from single parent homes. She says they see firsthand how issues of non support play into the family dynamic. Mohn is not sure this list will make parents pay up.
“Those that aren’t paying probably not. They have their own issues for not paying,” said Mohn.
But the Jefferson County attorney says in the last five ads they have been able to find 4,000 parents and collect over $2 million.
