LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Changes on and around the Kennedy Bridge are creating lots of confusion for drivers. There are already massive delays, now they're intensified with the late word on Tuesday that crews would have to allow drivers one fewer lane.
Contractors have to install a complete concrete driving surface on the bridge, because reinforced steel on the bridge was found to be too close to the driving surface to put down a waterproof asphalt membrane. The new equipment was larger, so they needed more room to work.
The Southbound side of the bridge towards Louisville is down to one lane until July 4 while they work on all three southbound lanes. Then the single lane will transfer to the northbound side driving toward Southern Indiana, which has typically been the more congested side. I-65 has been backed up for several miles in the week the project has been going on, including all the way to the Watterson Expressway when it started last week.
Aug. 15 is still the planned completion date for the bridge.
