LODI, Calif. (WHAS11) – A couple of scrooges couldn’t ruin Christmas for a soldier who just returned from Afghanistan after 17 months.

Army Corporal Chris Petrossian said thieves broke into his home Wednesday after he went out with his wife.

The thieves got away with more than $5,000 worth of presents including video games, a digital camera and an iPad which the couple saved up for.

Community members including firefighters and police heard about their story and stepped up in a big way donating money so the gifts could be replaced.

“Lodi is a great town. I have lived here a long and like I said, absolute strangers, complete strangers have come together. Lodi Adopt-A-Child gave us a whole bag of toys for her. She went to meet Santa today and she really loved that. She had a great- huh," Cpl. Petrossian said.

Despite what happened, Petrossian’s daughter said she got the best present already – her dad home for the holidays.
