(WHAS11) A Butler High School student got quite a surprise in band class Friday afternoon.
Matthew Devore was chosen by the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to receive the Michael Kamen Award and was presented with $17,000 French horn.
The Butler senior researched scholarships online and was able to find this one.
“With any other scholarship, I realized there are about 5,000 other people applying for it and I was kind of a little bit skeptical, but filled out the application and hoped for the best,” said Devore.
Matthew has been playing the French horn for seven years; he also plays the piano, drums and the trumpet.
The Butler senior plans on attending the University of Louisville upon graduation.
