(WHAS11) -- Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker was officially sworn in as the new secretary of state in a ceremony on Saturday in Frankfort.
She is succeeding Trey Grayson who has resigned to take a job at Harvard University.
Governor Beshear was on hand in the state's Supreme Court Chambers to witness his pick being sworn in.
"We need somebody with unquestioned honesty, and integrity,” Beshear said. “We need somebody that has been a leader."
"It's finally starting to sink in that I am in fact Kentucky's secretary of state,” Walker said. “Seeing all these people who have come to be with me to celebrate this… it's a great feeling."
Walker plans to run for the position after serving out Grayson’s term through Jan. 1.
Fellow Democrat and Lexington Attorney Allison Lundergan Grimes has filed to run against her.
